JKP3 & USJ2 gets its first public fruit orchard

JKP3 together with St Gobain Contruction & MPSJ launched the first public fruit orchard in JKP3 (USJ2-15) area. 100 fruit trees of various species provided by MPSJ were planted by volunteers from St Gobain Construction.

This is also significant, as since taking over as councillor in 2009, I've been highlighting the plot of land in USJ, which was under the administration of the Department of Civil Aviation, but was in ruins and unkept. We have been pursuing this matter and recently MPSJ has taken back the land, as DCA was not using it anymore.

Upon taking it back, we have restored it as a green land, this time by turning it into a fruit orchard.

This is the 2nd piece of land in zone 3 that has been restored as an open space, after the urban forest in USJ3C which was recently planted with 1111 forest trees.

A PRIVATE firm has planted 100 fruit trees as part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) project on a hillock off Jalan USJ2/2R.

The project, called People’s Orchard, was one of Saint Gobain Construction’s efforts to create a park for the public to come and relax.

Subang Jaya assemblyman Hannah Yeoh said that the top portion of the hillock that once housed radar equipment for the Department of Civil Aviation had been dismantled and the land handed over to the Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ).

“With fruits trees grown on top of the hillock and a public park built around it, the park is now a good place for recreational activities. Trees like mango, ciku, soursop, honey guava, kedondong, rambutan and pulasan trees have been planted,” she said.

MPSJ councillor Rajiv Rishyakaran said people would be able to reap the fruits of this labour, literally, in years to come.

Earlier Yeoh, who met the residents living around the area, said she had come to check on the newly installed floodlights and two sets of park table/benches at the park that residents had requested a few months ago in a dialogue session.

“The RM8,730 for the one pole with two lamps and the RM5,000 for the two park tables and eight benches came from my service centre’s allocation. Now, I just want the people to care for the facilities. With the floodlights installed it would help to bring down the crime rate. On the issues of graffiti, vandalism and discarded broken bottles, we need the help of the Subang Jaya district police to conduct patrols in the neighbourhood,” she said.

Yeoh added that her approach has helped to build a strong network with the residents.

Resident Y. Sela said the added facilities and the fruit trees in the park made it a better place for walks in the morning and evening.

“We are a close knit community and improved facilities at a park will augur well as this will encourage neighbours to come out in the late evenings and mingle around,” he said.

Orchard crops up on vacant land

A PLOT of land within the USJ2/2R playground, on which a building once stood and where radar equipment was stored, is now an orchard.

The 0.4ha piece of land previously occupied by the Department of Civil Aviation was recently returned to the Subang Jaya Municipal Council after many decades.

Zone 3 councillor Rajiv Rishyarakan, whose areas of responsibility include USJ2, said the old building was abandoned and the surroundings run down.

"We had worked since 2009 to take back the land. After the council takeover, we demolished the building and the land has been put into good use -- as the USJ2 orchard.

"On Dec 3, 60 staff members of Port Klang-based company, Saint Gobain Construction, held a corporate social responsibility  programme and planted trees there.

"They planted 100 fruit trees such as kedondong, mango, ciku, rambutan   and soursop supplied by the council," he said.

The fencing surrounding the plot of land will not be removed for the time being, said Rajiv.

Subang Jaya assemblyman Hannah Yeoh, thanked the staff of Saint Gobain Construction for the effort.

"It is good to have an orchard as many urban kids do not know what fruit trees look like.

"Any effort, no matter how small,  to green the earth deserves praise," she said during a visit to the site.

USJ Urban Forest

The last remaining piece of unmarked land in USJ, situated between the TNB power lines and USJ3C along Persiaran Setia, will be developed into an Urban Forest. Since last year, the usage of this piece of land has been up in discussion, since the proposed private recreation development fell thru and was cancelled.

While private developers were eying the land (size about 5 acres) for various commercial development, JKP Zone 3 was determined to see it preserved as recreational for the benefit of Subang Jaya & USJ residents. Toying with the idea of an Organic Eco Farm, center for some cultural activities, and a green lung, the development of this recreational center is moving ahead this November with the phase 1: creating an urban forest.

What was great was MPSJ Town Planning Department also was moving along the same thinking lines as JKP, and they revealed earlier this year a suggestion to create the urban forest. Things got into motion with a meeting between MPSJ’s Town Planning Department, Landscape Department and JKP in March.

Since then, Rotary Club of USJ has come forth to volunteer to do tree planting, and the timing was perfect, and so, with that on 11th November 2011 (11/11/11), JKP3, MPSJ & Rotary Club of USJ will be planting 1111 (yes, one thousand one hundred and eleven trees) at the site.

MPSJ is in the midst of preparing the trees to be planted, as well as the necessary earth works as you read this now. For Phase one, besides planting the trees, there will be an earth trail thru the “forest”.

Later, we aim to build some public toilets, maybe some picnic areas, and if we can get a suitable partner, start the Organic Farm, which will serve as some sort of plant and maybe animal museum to the city kids.

The trees for USJ Urban Forest 1st round planting would be:
  • Kasai - 100
  • Merawan Siput Jantan - 200
  • Chengal - 200
  • Meranti Tembaga - 200
  • Keruing Kertas - 200
  • Pelong - 100
  • Merawan Meranti - 100
  • Kelumpang Jari - 11
Total - 1111 trees

Whale of a time for families at USJ Family Day

IT WAS an evening filled with camaderie, fun and family togetherness at the USJ Family Day organised by the JKP Zone 3 of the Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) last Saturday.

Residents from USJ 2 to USJ 15 had turned up for the family day held at the MPSJ sports complex. Braving a light shower earlier on, the residents came out in droves. A long queue was spotted at the registration booth where the first 500 to register were given goodie bags.

Under white canopies were stalls offering a range of products and services.

There were the food and drinks operators, telecommunication companies, non-governmental organisations as well as small home businesses selling accessories and clothes, among others.

Not a deterrent: A big crowd at the event despite a drizzle.

MPSJ councillor for JKP Zone 3 Rajiv Rishyakaran said there were 88 stalls altogether where 16 of them were “Go Green” booths and the remaining selling various merchandise and F&B.

The Go Green booths, he said, were made up of vendors selling organic and green products and crafts or even recyclable items.

“Home businesses were charged a fee of RM50 per booth while the professional companies were charged RM100.

“The money collected is channelled into our JKP funding to offset our cost and expenses in organising this family day,” said Rajiv.

The event had something for everyone. Young children were having a ball of time playing inside the inflatable castle as parents watched over them. There were telematches, football clinic and demonstrations by the firemen and the police.

The marketplace stalls was also a hive of activity as crowds gathered to buy food and shop for merchandise, while other operators were demonstrating their products.

Fun time: Children and their parents taking part in a host of games.

But the ultimate highlight of the evening was the hot air balloon, where all 100 tickets were sold out. They were sold at RM15 for adults and RM10 for children.

The activity was not only a hit with children but adults too as they gathered around the balloon as soon as it was being inflated.

Rajiv said the windy weather had forced them to stop the hot air balloon activity a little earlier than schduled.

“We wished we could have been able to accommodate more people seeing such overwhelming response,” he said.

Lucky draw were also conducted throughout the event from 6.30pm to 10pm. Stage performances kept the crowd entertained while others kept themselves busy at health screening, pets adoption and exhibition corner.

Rajiv said there were two highlights for him personally for this event.

“Firstly, we managed to pull this off with the help of 100 volunteers from the different resident associations and apartment management corporations. Our JKP with only 16 members could not have done it alone.

“Secondly, what motivated us was seeing how much fun the crowd had,” said Rajiv, adding that this is one of the biggest JKP events organised.

Each of the 24 JKP zones under MPSJ receives RM27,000 a year to carry out activities and community events.

Rajiv said the family day also received corporate sponsorship amounting to RM28,000 and another RM10,000 contribution from Subang Jaya assemblyman Hannah Yeoh’s office. Yeoh was not present as she is still on maternity leave.

The crowd turnout this time around is over 5,000 people surpassing last year’s count of 3,000.

The family day was officially launched by Selangor state executive councillor Teresa Kok.

NKRA Safe City - Call for Suggestions & Request

Under NKRA's Safe City initiative, if you have any suggestions that fall into this 4 categories for Zone 3 (USJ2-15), please email them to me by 7th January 2011.
  1. Lighting (Park or street)
  2. Separation of Pedestrian walkpaths from motor ways
  3. Safety mirrors
  4. Cleaning up of overgrown bushes
I know there are many other suggestions outside of this 4 areas, but the NKRA is looking to implement this project, and they are only requesting for projects of this nature for now. We do not hold the power to approve, we are just playing the role to put forward the request, and hopefully most, if not all are approved and the money comes for its implementation.

If you have suggestions for outside zone 3, its not a problem, please channel them to the respective councillors. (or you can email it to me, and I'll forward it to them)

Best regards,
Rajiv

JKP3 Family Day coverage on Komunitikini

USJ family day is fowl-filled excitement

BY LEVEN WOON ON 22 JUN, 2010

IN COMMUNITY INSPIRESEVENTSNEWSSUBANG JAYA.
Laughter, cheering and children’s quick steps were among the sounds clearly heard in USJ 5 field when JKP Zone 3 organised its first ever “chicken catching” contest during USJ Family Day held last Saturday’s evening.
While many might think city dwellers have a phobia to real chicken, Subang juniors immediately dismissed the claim at the moment 50 chickens were released on field.
The children aged 12 and below went all-out to chase and catch the chickens running around.
The activity was the highlight of the Family Day. Designated for kids aged 12 and below, the 15-minute event saw all 50 chickens getting caught and brought home by the young accomplishers.
JKP Zone 3 chairman Rajiv Rishyakaran said the residents committee and him have been planning the event since December last year.
“We are proud to succeed the biggest and first ever family day at night. We also would like to thank our volunteers to their selfless dedication in organising the event.”
He said some 100 community volunteers showed up as early as 6am that day to help setup booths, arrange things and organised the venue.
(Second from the left) Hannah and Rajiv (forth from left) were doing lucky draws.
The Family Day also featured activities such as football matches between Brazil Club vs Subang Jaya Committee Youth Football League, clown art, sand craft art, health screening by Forest Medical Centre, ‘Meet the Firemen’ showcase and performances from “Wonder Ladies”, Kim Sng and SonShine Playhouse.
‘Wonder Ladies’ performing Korean hit- Nobody But You.
Big turnout drew a high pitch where some 1000 residents flew in from all over Subang Jaya, some even came from Puchong for the event held from 5pm to 11pm.
Komunitikini also setup a booth to offer Malaysiakini special subscription rates and Zunar’s latest political comics.
Subang assemblyperson Hannah Yeoh said the performances on stage were all from the local groups who have passion for art.
“Sometimes there aren’t many platforms for the local groups, but this is exactly the right venue for them to showcase their talents.
She noted that it was beatboxer Kim Sng’s second times to performing at a family day.
Considering the overwhelming response this time, Rajiv said he will consider making it a yearly affair.
